I'm a beginner flatpicker; I've learned how to play some simple Carter-style arrangements (here's an example of my very stiff version of "Down in the Willow Garden": https://www.box.com/s/zdd1bzh13nfc28az5pm2). I'm really interested in the "Classic Arrangements of Vintage Songs" book to help me build a bigger repertoire of songs, but I don't want to invest if the songs are going to be way beyond my level of skill. Is anyone who is familiar with this book able to comment?

Thanks!

Will,

At the risk of stepping on Steve's comments, here is my take. Classic Arrangements has very basic beginner arrangements, as well as some up to intermediate (in my opinion) .  Some tunes have more than one version.  I couldn't follow your link, but unless you are an absolute beginner, most of the songs in the collection should be ok for you.  Many of the arrangements in this collection are amazingly good.

You might also want to consider one of the Band in the Book volumes -- these are all beginner arrangements.

Thanks for the response! It looks like the forum added the closing parenthesis to the URL, which made it invalid... I think I'm going to take a chance and order the book, but am open to other feedback or alternative suggestions as well.

Here's a link that should work:

Just wanted to say that I got the book this weekend, and can't remember the last time I had this much fun... The arrangements I've tried near the beginning haven't been too difficult to muddle through, but it will definitely take some serious practice to get them memorized and clean enough to consider 'added' to my repertoire. I'm particularly loving the arrangement of Blue Ridge Mountain Blues - Steve has such an amazing gift for arranging tunes so that even the beginner versions sound fantastic, which really provides a huge motivation boost to keep going. This book will keep me busy for a long time.

Will - How's it going or did you plow through that book?

Keep me posted on your progress.
